Here's an actual description by Paul Edinger and how he used the tool to find a short

Tail lights and marker lights were blowing fuses....removed all the bulbs and at all sockets there was continuity to ground,  found the 12V positive was a blue with red wire (using the schematic :) ). Found that at the fuse panel and using your tool started the path down the harness....it joined other harnesses then separated into two before the firewall,  Once through the firewall it separated into 4 separate harnesses.  Following the short finder tool to the shorted harness which went to the radio...an aftermarket radio was installed by a national electronics chain....pulled the radio and found the installation harness had some unused wires for this application, which they did not insulate or cap.  The harness was a mess very unprofessional workmanship. I redid the harness arrangement and taped the unneeded wires, wrapped the harness with spiral wrap and reinstall.  All is well and the learning opportunity for my 19 year old son was priceless ​
